Mike's Broken :( plus he nearly drowned!

Or his ankle is at least.
I don't really know any details yet but he asked me to let people know. Looks like he is going to be in the Royal Infermary for the next couple of weeks!

It is quite some story Mike has to tell! and it bears little resemblance to what is reported in the news - don't you just love our accurate unbiased press...

I don't feel I can do the story justice and Mike loves telling them so I will leave the details up to him.
The gist of it is that he and Gillian (JMCS) abseiled off some sea cliffs in the north east of Skye on to a ledge to do a 3-star severe. They had some trouble with one of the ropes, Gillian climbed down from the ledge to get it and got washed off by a wave. Mike ended up in the water trying to get her out. They were both roped up and everything so they got themselves back onto the ledge and started up the climb (which was the only way out). Mike somehow fell off (probably because he was soaking wet) and his top piece of gear ripped so he fell past the ledge, smashed his heel on something and ended up in the water which was getting pretty turbulent. Somehow he got out (although it sounded like he thought he wasn't going to) and they eventually got helicoptered off.

If anyone wants to pay him a visit he is in Ward 1.09, room 8 in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Evening visiting hours are 18:30-20:00. He would definately appreciate it.

Come on down folks and view the invalid!?!?!

Its really boring here, but I'm damn glad to be alive.

Does anybody want to borrow my Rack for the next few months? Unfortunately the ropes are in the Atlantic somewhere.

BTW Helicopter travel is the way forward - 3D Motorbiking - awesome?!?!

I have a broken heel bone - badly broken as possible - I'm waiting for the swelling to go down so that they can operate sometime between Saturday and Monday. I will be on crutches for 3 months and take a total of 12 months to fully recover. That's the worst estimate, so I'll work backwards from that.

Thanks for any messages and good wishes

Mike

PS. I did wonder what I was going to get for my 40th Birthday ?!?!?

Do you get the internet in hospital then? How times have changed since my single unhappy encounter with a horrible surgical place. You should count your blessings!

Are you going to be in hospital on your birthday? When is your birthday?

What's your home address? I'll send up some grapes in a brown paper bag.

I have my laptop with a broadband dongle - you have to pay for the phone/radio/computer-thingy, but the internet is crap on it.

Yes - I'm glad to be alive - It was a terrifying experience, but I'll have a 2 hour op to fix it all tomorrow; internal plates and screws with a possible bone graft too.
3 months on crutches, total of 12 months recovery time - I'll work back from that.

Yes, in Hospital on my Birthday for sure - Tuesday 29th July :-( 40th as well :-)

Home address 43, Bonaly Road, Edinburgh EH13 0EH
Hospital Address: Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Ward 109, Base C, Room 8, Bed C

I'm fine, but a little bored - I'll ring you when I get out, send my your number in Wales then.

cheers
Mike

OUCH! Well done for getting out of that, sounds like a very sticky situation. Good luck recovering.

Operation is definitely today
If you want a laugh come and see me tomorrow as I'll still have lots of very powerful drugs running around my system!

Happy days .......

I should be out on Friday with crutches and moon-boot - provided the surgeon is happy with his handy work on the Friday morning ward round.

Next Tuesday evening, Channel 5, 19:30 "Highland Emergency" - I guess my accident may in one of the episodes of this series? Enjoy!

Yes, the rescue obviously not the accident!?!? Apparently its a 6 part series starting next Tuesday - I haven't a clue when or if we'll be in it, but we were filmed for it - Lets see!

BTW, Gill my climbing partner has sent a letter about the incident to the Scotsman about the accident and the report they printed - her letter is in today's (Friday 1st August) issue apparently - I haven't read it yet though.
