Day trip 6th Feb 2011

Postby Andy » Tue Feb 01, 2011 3:31 pm

Any opinions? Me and Matt discussed Bridge of Orchy on the way back from the CIC, but I've had the thought of heading to Northumberland for a bit of rock. Obviously the weather will have a big hand in the decision making process, and theres still the possibility of going to Loch Morlich for a full weekend trip if we can get a bus.

Thoughs/opinions/rumours??

Wow the forums are in use.
WE do have 2 buses this weekend, 1 for the whole weekend and 1 for sunday, both AC 9 seaters according to Reuben/the transport list.
I'm game for rock climbing if its sunny and 5-10 degress, but if the weather is that good would be tempted to goto norries or orchy or something too.
Hard to pick eh.

-------------UPDATE-----------

The ski touring session has been cancelled cos the weather's naff, but the 9 seater for the weekend is a hire that's arrived and been paid for. We're going to cancel the 9 booked for Sunday as it would be daft having 2 9 seaters on the same day. The current suggestion is to drive to an indoor wall on Saturday, and then do a regular day trip Sunday. this also opens up the possibility of heading up on Saturday night, camping somewhere and getting an early start in.

Discuss!

From the forecasts (MWIS for Glencoe,BBC for Northumberland) I'm thinking we run south and climb somthing rocky with our hands - shock horror! I reckon a warm jacket and gloves will be very useful though if we do

I reckon northymberland is looking best weather. We could drop walkers off to go up The Cheviot or something, only thing of not in that area if Zoe/others would be interested in that? We may even have cheviot maps in the shed, can't remember.

I don't really have much of an idea about the areas, so I don't mind what we are doing as long as it isn't a really long day.

I think you should leave sunday morning having been to an awesome flat party on saturday night ;-)

what time would a likely trip down south be leaving as it won't require a winter start time of stupid o'clock in the morning - thinking of coming for climbing

Made a new account rather than trying to find my password. :)

The Cheviot is actually a fairly boring walk, and the view from the top is practically nonexistent because it's so flat. However there's the Eildon Hills next to Melrose which is a quite nice walk, along St Cuthbert's Way, though I did do that walk recently. Do you have a specific destination in mind, so I know what sort of area I'm looking at for hills?

Oh, and - the Eildon hills are quite small, so to make a reasonable walk out of it (if we choose that) I'd suggest starting from further away - last time I did it I started from St Boswells.

I can't see any other big hills in that area. To the West, just SW of Peebles, there's Pykestone Hill (737m) and Dollar Law (817m), accessible from Drummelzier or Megget Reservoir. I also found this photo album of someone's walk up Scald Hill: http://www.northumberland-cam.com/chevi ... d-hill.htm

That's all the suggestions I have, and now I'm going to get back to work.

We are thinking of heading somewhere to climb near Alnwick, so basically I guess you guys could get dropped off at any location you want in the Cheviots or anywhere in the surrounding area, so I guess it depends what you want to do :)

Or we could go to the pub and watch Ireland embarrassingly only just beating Italy.
(Rugby by the way. The only team sport I can get vaguely excited about, for some reason)

Breaking news...
SAIS avalanche forecast for northern Cairngorm has been revised from "Shit Scary" to low! Southern Cairngorm expected to do the same. Snap freeze thaw apparently. Some weather I've looked at suggests wind could moderate on Sunday as well.
Sod this south nonsense.
