Proposed changes - Raeburn Hut for somewhere else

January winter skills courses dates need to be confirmed and worked into the plan, but it is likely that they'll be around the end of week 1 or 2 of second semester

We should probably make sure that the day trips, at least for the first few weeks while we're still picking up Freshers, have decent options for both climbing and walking. That way, if we get someone who likes 'walking' but isn't all that confident or keen on 'climbing' then we're not putting them off by only going to climbers' crags. And also, it gives an option if the conditions don't favour climbing but are still good enough to walk in. (Of course, the converse applies for climbers who don't much care for walking, but that category is much better represented in the club.)

I'm not sure whether having a full weekend camping trip on the first weekend might put off some of the more 'casual' Freshers, particularly if the weather doesn't co-operate? There's presumably some good climbing in the Peaks, which is why it's on the list, but it might give us a rather more 'hardcore' image than is usually the case and scare some people off.

The first trip is almost a certainty, as we have the Monday off and it would be daft to miss the opportunity to get to the peaks whilst the goings good.

As for "climbing" vs. "walking", I see your point, but generally the initial outlay for kit is much less, and we can provide much more, for climbing. Also taken into consideration are the walking trips done by the chapliancy, and the fact that very little climbing will be done come November. At this point we're planning to go for more walking trips, and this should be shortly after the tisos discount nights.

Essentially if it's sunny and I'm driving (and I suspect the same view will be held by Emma), we're off for a climb! Walking can be done on essentially all of these trips too

just to check the end of week one is friday 17th sept for semester one and friday 14th Jan for semester 2

As a climber I was initially put off by some of the mixed day trips which are often a poor compromise for both climbing and walking (as far as i'm aware as I don't really walk) The ideal place for people wanting to try climbing is a crag environment with a wide selection of single pitch routes across the grade range, preferably somewhere people organising the trip have been to before so they can help things run smoothly. The peaks is not a hardcore climbing destination it is widely regarded as one of the best climbing locations in the UK with a huge range of climbs (some of which are hardcore). As to the image of the club and its membership these are linked in that most of the people who climb at HW are not in the club as they see it as not really setup for climbers who are not mountaineers as well.

do you know when the chaplaincy are planning events (as they will reduce trip numbers - or we need to out advertise/indoctrinate people)

also no CIC this year? I'd prefer to do a CIC hut trip and move the what is essentially a social trip to the ben nevis inn to a nice and cheaper hut somewhere else.

Fun discussion for the pub tomorrow and even looks like good weather

the mixed trip point, i'd like to clarify by "Climbing/Walking" I mean intend to climb, unless the weather is pants and therefore we'd walk. See the options after "/" as alternatives, rather than simultaneous events. For the mostpart at least

In that case I'd suggest the possibility of two simultaneous sunday trips one to climb one to walk early on if there is the demand - there are a few decent climbing places accessible by train - although given the likely driver situation I would recommend those wanting to walk having a serious look what they can do by train from edinburgh on a sunday (or even saturday). This would have course mean getting the timing right as the train won't wait if you're too ambitious and take too long!
